“I want to give you permission to not have a plan when it comes to your career,” Advised Deborah Brooks, dine around speaker. Brooks’ career path took many twists and turns before cofounding the Michael J. Fox Foundation and serving as the executive vice chairman. Brooks also advised that it is important to know yourself when thinking about career transitions and to a find place where you’re convinced that you can make a difference.
In discussing the biggest differences between recruiting talent in the for-profit and non-profit sectors, Brooks remarked that in the for-profit sector, people focus on skills and hope for passion, but in the non-profit sector, people look for passion and hope for skills. Brooks believes that effective recruitment in the healthcare sector should focus on both skills and passion. The feedback from event attendees was extremely positive, with ninety-two percent of attendees indicating that they would be more bold in their future career decisions. One participant commented, “Debi was an excellent speaker. If only all of us were such risk-takers!” Another expressed that Debi had “incredible passion.” Towards the end of the night, Brooks reminded attendees, “If you’re going to work really hard, you have to really love it!”
